A/Prof Ahmad Torshizi

I am a clinician-researcher working at the intersection of neuroscience, translational molecular psychiatry, and clinical practice. Based in Melbourne, I am an adult psychiatrist with a special interest in neurodevelopmental and interventional psychiatry, particularly Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). In these specialist areas, I assess and provide treatment and support to adults and emerging patients referred for suspected Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Additionally, I work with both neurotypical and neurodiverse individuals with treatment-resistant depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), evaluating their suitability for and administering TMS treatment at my co-located clinic under my direct supervision.

I am currently affiliated with the University of Western Australia’s Medical School as an Adjunct Associate Professor and with RMIT’s School of Psychology as an Adjunct Industry Associate Professor. My research interests focus on the neuroscientific underpinnings and biological treatments—including neurostimulation and pharmacotherapy—of ASD and ADHD.

I serve as a member of the Written Examination Subcommittee at the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) and am an active member of the Clinical TMS Society. I continuously collaborate with national and international colleagues to stay at the forefront of rTMS research, regularly attending scientific seminars, webinars, and reviewing the latest translational research to enhance both my clinical practice and research activities.

Beyond neurodevelopmental disorders, I see patients with a broad range of mental health concerns. Some present with established diagnoses of affective disorders—including anxiety, depressive, and bipolar-spectrum disorders—obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders, and trauma- and stress-related disorders. Others seek initial assessment, where I work to identify and diagnose these conditions.

In my clinical practice, I strive to integrate individualized, evidence-based, and emerging biological treatments—whether pharmacological or interventional—alongside non-pharmacological, recovery-oriented therapies. Additionally, I provide weekly psychotherapy sessions to a limited number of patients with “high-functioning autism,” employing an existential approach to support their therapeutic journey.
